The History of the Open Science Movement

In this book, the open science movement is understood as a reaction to identified problems, and thus as a self-correcting process within science. At its center is a lack of trust in findings published in scientific journals. Some of these problems have been known in similar form for decades. However, it took decisive events before they were publicly discussed and proposed solutions were developed. Because of difficulties in replicating past results that had been considered reliable (that is, arriving at the same result in repeated investigations), this is often referred to as a replication crisis. Due to the uncertainty about the exact causes of low replication rates, the term “crisis of confidence” is sometimes preferred instead (Feest, 2019).
